I’ve dropped BlueCyborg’s free UK shipping threshold from £40 to £25.
The old £40 figure has been around for years and, if I remember rightly, was based on the price of an RPG manual.
Which made sense, because I make roughly nothing on D&D books.
The theory was that someone buying a book might also grab some dice or an accessory, making the order worthwhile. Otherwise I get to wrap a book in 14 layers of bubble wrap, discover none of my boxes fit it, build it a custom cardboard fortress, hand it over to Royal Mail and spend the next two days worrying about it.
Then I make about 50p.
And that’s only if I pretend my time is free.
This is also why I can’t just make shipping free on everything. Free shipping still has to be paid for somewhere, and the usual answer is simply to hide it in the product price.
I’d rather not do that. Especially as I charge the same prices online and at events, where charging everyone extra for postage would be a bit daft when I’m literally handing you the thing.
I did consider dropping the threshold to £20, but books and games gave me the financial equivalent of a stern look.
So £25 it is.
Hopefully that makes free shipping much easier to reach without me having to start charging £6 for a d20.
